Why Sustainability Shapes the Way I Design...

Protecting the environment has shaped the way I live. For more than 20 years in Korea, I made weekly recycling a part of my routine, building a lasting commitment to sustainability.

Working as a flight attendant and traveling around the world, I saw how sustainability takes many forms, from zero-waste stores to eco-friendly campaigns. These experiences made me realize how crucial thoughtful design is in helping people take meaningful, sustainable action.

Applying design thinking and AI-driven innovation

From April to May 2025, I participated in the Foothill Innovation Challenge, a six-week workshop where I explored how AI and innovation can be applied to address social challenges.

During the innovation challenge, I applied design thinking and prototyping principles to develop human-centered solutions, created a 2 minutes elevator pitch and slide deck presentation, and produced graphic summaries to communicate the solution effectively. This experience gave me hands-on insight into tackling real-world problems through design.

Problem

When Sustainability Goals Meet Real-World

Through the workshop and my research, I became particularly interested in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Through the workshop and my research, I became particularly interested in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities and Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

However, I noticed that systems supporting sustainable packaging and zero-waste behaviors are still fragmented and hard to access. Existing apps and campaigns often present information in ways that are too complex, which can discourage even motivated users from taking action.

Designing for Sustainable Action

Designing for Sustainable Action

This observation led to the creation of Neovi, a zero-waste system design project that combines style system and product design to make sustainable behaviors more accessible and actionable.

Neovi simplifies complex sustainability messages, guiding users to adopt eco-friendly actions in their daily lives.

Typography for Sustainable Communication

Neovi’s typography style guide system plays a central role in making sustainability accessible. By using clear and intuitive messaging, users are guided to take eco-friendly actions while building trust in the system. The guide defines a consistent visual language, including font hierarchy, color usage, spacing, and icon integration, ensuring clarity across all interfaces. Key typefaces, such as Helvetica for readability and LTC Flash for emphasis, highlight important actions and messages, making complex sustainability concepts actionable and understandable without overwhelming the user.

Designing Intuitive Flows for Zero-Waste Behavior

The UX/UI design of Neovi focuses on helping users seamlessly interact with sustainable behaviors through a zero-waste packaging platform. Users can custom-order packaging, scan objects, and see a 3D preview showing how different eco-friendly materials contribute to sustainability and environmental impact.

The design process was fast and iterative, sketches and wireframes were quickly produced in Figma, stitched together, and implemented using Vibe Coding. By applying a platform design system via prompts, we ensured consistency across all pages while conveying a clear, eco-friendly aesthetic. App mockups and UI flows visualize these interactions, translating research insights into practical, human-centered experiences.

Turning Design Insight into Real Impact

Neovi shows how I approach design, combining user-centered experiences with clear communication to solve real problems. I researched environmental challenges highlighted by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and used those insights to guide the project. This led me to create a typography style guide, design applications, and a zero-waste packaging platform that make sustainability simple and easy to act on. Through this work, I learned how thoughtful design can turn complex systems into something understandable and engaging, while connecting design, communication, and human behavior to create real impact.
